Who: |
In 1920, Adi Dassler built his first pair of shoes in his mother's laundry room in the village of Herzogenaurach, Germany. He had started out as a baker, but after WWI got a hold of surplus materials from the disbanded German army and decided to change the history of modern sports (and the way you dress) instead. |
How: |
With no electricity and a bicycle-powered leather trimming machine, Adi made all of his shoes by hand. By 1925 he employed 12 people, including family, and was turning out 50 pair of shoes each day. He had also developed the first studded track shoes with hand forged spikes made by a blacksmith friend and neighbor. |
When: |
Dassler shoes made their debut at the Amsterdam Olympics in 1928 and have been worn by medal winners and record breakers at every major sports event since. What looks like pure style today was pure performance back in the day. In 1967 the first adidas tracksuit debuted and in 1972 the now famous three-leafed Trefoil logo was introduced. |
