| Description: If this bag could talk… actually, we wish it could, because then it could tell us where it actually came from. This chatelaine style bag was acquired at a Whiting & Davis estate along with several other W&D bags offered by Orlando Vintage through Fashion Dig. It has no insignia, but was assured to us as a Whiting & Davis. According to our research, the W&D Co. originated as Wade, Davis, and Co. in 1876. It wasn’t until 1880 when Charles A. Whiting joined the firm, and was partner in 1890, creating their famous name. It could be that the bag was produced before the name was created. Nonetheless it is an incredible bag with unique style. The frame is cathedral dome shaped with a grape-leaf design. The body is made of flexible interlocking metal rings, much like medieval armor. It has an adjustable braided loop to allow the bag to hang from the wrist, and a knob clasp for opening. The bottom apexes into three triangular shapes, with metal ring tassels hanging from each. |
